Aims & Scope
Anthropological Quarterly (AQ) features the highest quality peer-reviewed articles in ethnography and anthropological theory. One of the longest running journals in anthropology, AQ was founded in 1921 by the Catholic University of America and published as Primitive Man until 1953 when the Catholic University of America Press renamed the journal Anthropological Quarterly. The change of title was part of a broader shift in anthropology to eliminate anachronistic and Eurocentric terminology in the social sciences. In 2001, the George Washington University Institute for Ethnographic Research acquired AQ as an independent journal unconnected to the major commercial publishing companies. AQ ’s editorial and publishing office is housed in the George Washington University Department of Anthropology.
