Aims & Scope

The first issue of Archeologia e Calcolatori was published in 1990 on the initiative of the Istituto per l'Archeologia Etrusco-Italica (nowIstituto di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), together with theDipartimento di Archeologia e Storia delle Artiof the University of Siena. The publisherAll'Insegna del Giglioin Florence was chosen due to its long-established experience in publishing archaeology-related journals and books. The new journal was established with the idea of publishing consistently and systematically the results of computer-based research in the field of historical archaeology, offering an up-to-date edition of ongoing projects both in Italy and abroad. Some specific aspects have characterised the journal in the international panorama: the multilingualism, the dialectical relationship between theory and experimentation, the continuous bibliographical updating, and the evaluation of techniques and methods through tangible archaeological results. From the outset, the aim was to initiate an open and continuous flow of information between different countries, leading to the formation of an internationalScientific Committee. Representatives from prominent Italian and foreign institutions with an interest in archaeological computing agreed to join as members. Over time, the committee expanded to include additional specialised members, leading to itscurrent composition. The journal is organised into three distinct parts. The first collects articles concerning theoretical aspects of archaeological computing as well as reports on programmes conducted by dedicated international institutions. The main section contains articles on various computer applications, such as databases, Geographical Information Systems, quantitative methods, expert systems, computer graphics, image processing, multimedia and web tools.
