Íslenska þjóðfélaginu er ætlað að efla rannsóknir og fræðilega umræðu um íslenskt þjóðfélag sem tiltekið fræðilegt viðfangsefni. Megináhersla tímaritsins er á kenningarlega umræðu og aðferðafræði byggða á vísindalegum grunni. Tímaritið er vettvangur fyrir fjölbreytilegar rannsóknir á íslenska þjóðfélaginu og hvatt er til framlags frá öllum greinum félagsvísinda sem hafa íslenskan félagsveruleika að viðfangsefni, til dæmis félagsfræði, afbrotafræði, mannfræði, þjóðfræði, stjórnmálafræði, kynjafræði, mennta- og uppeldisvísindum og fjölmiðlafræði.
