Ars et Humanitas
Ljubljana University Press, Faculty of Arts · Slovenia · Est. 2007
Aims & Scope
Ars & Humanitas is a journal for art and humanities, fields that in contemporary society are often separated by an absurd need for precise demarcation of their interrelationships, jurisdictions, and content, research approaches, and work methodologies. Ars & Humanitas aims to overcome this separation. In the humanistic tradition, Ars is understood as art, but also as skill, knowledge, science. Humanitas as humanities, comprehensive education, refinement, and nobility of spirit. One cannot truly exist without the other. However, the fragmentation of intellectual horizons is unfortunately much greater. Even within the humanities, the fragmentation of the scientific and research space into narrowly specialized disciplines is becoming a serious obstacle to the development of humanistic sciences. With the increasing number of specialized scientific publications, their creators and readers, strictly defined in terms of theoretical and discursive approach, there is a need to offer more space for new, interdisciplinarily designed scientific journals. Ars & Humanitas wants to be exactly that – it aims to encourage the connection of social sciences and humanities disciplines, strengthen the dialogue between different theoretical orientations, open original approaches to the treatment of topics, draw attention to current aspects of interference, and ensure the promotion of humanities both in professional circles and in the wider public. The journal's structure is tripartite: the main thematic block (studies) will feature studies by domestic and foreign experts reflecting various approaches to the chosen topic, while the open block (varia) will be dedicated to contributions that are particularly current at a given moment or offer a fresh perspective on the topic. The third part will be dedicated to reviews of the latest and most current scientific publications from the broader humanities and social sciences field. The journal will pay special attention to the national and regional specifics of humanities and social sciences within the European Union, as well as to the promotion of national cultures and arts. In line with this, one of the important missions of Ars & Humanitas is to strengthen awareness of the importance of language in the development of humanities, as language in the humanities sciences transcends the role of a communication tool and is inextricably linked to the very development of humanities sciences. The journal is based on multilingualism, and special care will be devoted to Slovenian humanities and the development of professional terminology in the Slovenian language. At a time when globalization is inexorably eroding the very foundations of cultural and intellectual diversity, when modern development trends increasingly measure every activity with the uniform yardstick of productivity, when even some official representatives of science try to instill in us in various ways the belief that humanities are becoming redundant and useless, every step in the opposite direction is worthy of attention and encouragement. The establishment of a new journal for art and humanities is undoubtedly such a step.
