Student experiences in academia are oftenclosely linked to the many systemic barriers including issues of Eurocentrism and a lack of an interdisciplinary focus amongst mainstream subject matter. In efforts to combat issues like these, the academic journalCaribbean Quiltaims to provide an interdisciplinarymedium for expressionandcritical thought. Asbranch ofthe academic student grouprepresenting all full-time students at the University of Toronto, enrolled in a Caribbean Studies course or program, theaim ofCaribbean Quilt– and more broadlytheCaribbean Studies Students Union (CARSSU)– isto organize with students to advocate for the betterment of the Caribbean, while addressing, and furthering discussions ofthe pertinent issues facing the region and its diaspora.Caribbean Quiltis an open-access journal, which means that all content is available free of charge to the user and/or their institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of the articles, or use them for any other legal purpose, without seeking the prior permission of the publisher or author. This is consistent with the BOAI definition of open access. To make this space as accessible as possible,Caribbean Quilthas no tightly controlled policy towards subject matter and there isno fee requiredfor publication. However, because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of Caribbean Studies, it is important that contributions be of interest to a wide audience and prepared so that those not familiar with the nuances ofa particulardisciplinecanstill understand the main message and why it is important to the study of the Caribbean.
