Aims & Scope

JHNAis the open-access electronic journal of theHistorians of Netherlandish Art. Founded in 2009, the journal appears twice a year, in winter and summer.JHNApublishes peer-reviewed original scholarship, across a range of methodological approaches, on Dutch, Flemish, German, and Franco-Flemish art and material culture dating from the medieval period through the eighteenth century. We also publish state-of-research and critical essays, as well as English translations of particularly significant articles originally published in other languages. In addition, we occasionally publish special issues, often guest edited. Book and exhibition reviews are published inHNAR(Historians of Netherlandish Art Reviews). JHNAwelcomes the submission of manuscripts from scholars at every career stage. We also encourage proposals for state of research and critical essays.JHNApublishes in English and prefers submissions in English, but we will consider manuscripts in Dutch, German, and French. Authors of accepted articles in those languages are responsible for translation of the full text into English. Articles are typically 7,500 to 10,000 words, excluding endnotes, captions, and bibliography, though we also publish shorter pieces. For manuscript format, image specifications, andJHNAprocedures, see ourSubmission Guidelines.JHNAseeks to ensure the highest critical and intellectual standards; articles and essays are evaluated in a double-anonymous peer review process. As an online journal,JHNAis taking a leading role in the publication of enhanced multilayered images and other forms of presentation made possible by digital technology. All articles benefit from our advanced technology to display high-resolution images. We also encourage the submission of innovative digital art history projects, using such tools as multi-mode and side-by-side viewers for the overlaying of technical imagery and the comparison of zoomable high-resolution IIIF images, annotated hotspots for inset details and ad
