Masculinities and Social Change
Hipatia Editorial · Spain · Est. 2012
Aims & Scope
Masculinities & Social Change (MCS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open access academic journal dedicated to the study of masculinities and men’s studies. It is published quarterly (three issues per year) in online format by Hipatia Press. The journal publishes original empirical research that advances knowledge about masculinities and examines their role in broader processes of social transformation. MCS does not only collect research outcomes from different disciplines and methodological approaches, but also research carried out by interdisciplinary research teams. By fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue, the journal seeks to strengthen the analytical and empirical foundation of men’s studies. Unlike publications that focus primarily on the theoretical analysis of masculinities, MCS places particular emphasis on their impact on processes of social transformation. This orientation encourages research that moves beyond conceptual debate to examine how specific configurations of masculinity operate within social structures and everyday interactions. The journal highlights research that identifies and analyzes masculinities capable of fostering gender equality, preventing violence, and contributing to more just and democratic social relations. In this regard, MCS has become a significant platform for the development and dissemination of studies on alternative and transformative masculinities. It has supported empirical research that documents practices, narratives, and social interventions through which men actively challenge dominant norms and engage in egalitarian, non-violent, and solidarity-based relationships. By foregrounding scientific evidence on how such masculinities emerge, consolidate, and generate social impact, the journal contributes to advancing both academic knowledge and practical strategies aimed at overcoming gender-based violence and promoting egalitarian relationships across diverse social contexts.
