Aims & Scope

JH&P welcomes manuscripts on environmental health, pollution science, and remediation. JH&P supports open exchange on toxic pollution, effects on human health, and practical strategies for site remediation. Articles in JH&P span field studies, exposure assessment, policy analysis, and technical notes on cleanup and prevention. Typical topics include heavy metals and industrial chemicals in soil, air, and water, community health near waste sites, artisanal mining and chemical safety, and monitoring methods that teams can repeat in low-resource settings. JH&P focuses on point source pollution, related health impacts, environmental control and remediation technology. JH&P also has an interest in ambient and indoor pollution. Pollutants of particular interest include heavy metals, pesticides, radionuclides, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), air particulates (PM10 and PM2.5), and other severe and persistent toxins. JH&P emphasizes work relating directly to low and middle-income countries, however relevant work relating to high-income countries will be considered on a case-by-case basis. JH&P does not publish on the following topics: greenhouse gases or climate change impacts, adaptation or vulnerability, biological or chemical oxygen demand (unless it relates directly to human health), pollution which has no potential human health impact, or for which there is no defined pathway to humans.

A twelfth criterion — whether APC fees are clearly disclosed — is not scored here; it is left out of the total rather than counted as a failure. Publication charges appear in the metrics card above.
