Aims & Scope

The Journal of Mathematical and Fundamental Sciences (JMFS) is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal published by the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). JMFS welcomes original full research articles in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, covering the following subject areas: Astronomy, Chemistry, Earth Sciences (Geodesy, Geology, Geophysics, Oceanography, Meteorology), Life Sciences (Agriculture, Biochemistry, Biology, Health Sciences, Medical Sciences, Pharmacy), Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. Rooted in the tradition of fundamental sciences, JMFS emphasizes that every published article must contribute to the basic understanding of natural principles. This contribution may come from the development of new theories, the discovery of new phenomena, or the elucidation of fundamental mechanisms underlying natural processes. Accordingly, even articles with an applied orientation must originate from fundamental questions and enrich our understanding of how nature works at the most basic level, including the Earth, its dynamic systems, and the processes of life. JMFS actively encourages submissions from rapidly growing fields of fundamental sciences that demonstrate high citation potential. These fields include Fundamental Earth and Geo Sciences (such as seismology, volcanology, geodynamics, planetary geology, physical oceanography, atmospheric physics, and climate dynamics), Fundamental Biology (such as cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, evolutionary biology, systems biology, and ecology), Fundamental Materials Physics (e.g., quantum mechanics of materials and basic electronic properties), Fundamental Chemistry (e.g., quantum chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, and basic reaction kinetics), Structural Biochemistry and Biophysics (e.g., atomic-level structure and dynamics of biological molecules), and Fundamental Molecular Biology (e.g., basic mechanisms of gene expression, signaling, and cellular regulation). In particular, JMFS welcomes research on f lora and fauna diversity, including studies on the taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and conservation biology of plant and animal species. Special attention is given to the application of fundamental research across all these fields in achieving sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For Fundamental Earth and Geo Sciences, relevant SDGs include climate action (SDG 13), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11). For Fundamental Biology and research on flora and fauna diversity, relevant SDGs include life below water (SDG 14), life on land (SDG 15), biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture (SDG 2), and the use of bioresources for medicine, food security, and bio-based materials. For Fundamental Materials Physics and Fundamental Chemistry, relevant SDGs include affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). For Structural Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology, relevant SDGs include good health and well-being (SDG 3), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), and zero hunger (SDG 2). These areas remain deeply rooted in fundamental science while maintaining strong relevance to real-world applications and natural phenomena, thereby offering high citation potential without compromising the journal's identity as a venue for basic science.
