Su propósito es constituirse como un espacio para el debate y difusión del conocimiento generado sobre las fronteras en general, las fronteras internacionales, las regiones y fenómenos fronterizos y transfronterizos en el mundo. La REF publica artículos originales que muestran resultados de investigación, análisis teóricos o propuestas metodológicas para el estudio de las fronteras. Dado el carácter multidisciplinario del campo de los estudios fronterizos se reciben artículos abordados disciplinaria o interdisciplinariamente desde la sociología, antropología, historia, geografía, economía, demografía, ciencia política y relaciones internacionales. La revista está dirigida a un público integrado por investigadores y académicos interesados en el estudio de estos temas.
