Aims & Scope
Studies in Digital Heritage (SDH) is a peer-reviewed academic journal established by the Office of Scholarly Publishing (OSP) and the Virtual World Heritage Lab at Indiana University. The mission of SDH is to promote the open exchange of information and knowledge among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and others who strive to improve the collection, use, management, preservation, and dissemination of Digitized Cultural Heritage. The vision of SDH is to be the premier forum where the scientific discussion among scholars can be developed, touching the entire gamut of Digital Heritage. SDH publishes peer-reviewed research articles and occasionally non-peer-reviewed materials (e.g., interviews and editorials) with biannual frequency. This is a peer-reviewed, online journal that publishes innovative research on new technological solutions for Digital Heritage applications as well as applications of existing digital technologies in cultural heritage fields, including Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Architectural History, Classics, Conservation Science, Egyptology, History, and Museology, where the innovation is in the humanity discipline but it is found thanks to a technological approach. While the journal covers a broad range of topics related to technology in cultural heritage studies, it places particular emphasis on 3D technologies. This includes 3D data capture, processing, and restoration, as well as the use of 3D models in research, education, and digital dissemination. The journal also explores best practices for metadata and paradata in 3D modeling and the integration of 3D models into VR, AR, and web-based platforms. Hence, when appropriate, authors are encouraged to embed interactive 3D models into their articles instead of traditional 2D illustrations. The journal supports WebGL solutions currently in use by professionals in the field, including 3DHop , Sketchfab , and Unity3D . Submitted 3D models undergo peer review alongside the accompanying text, with evaluation criteria based on their intended purpose and scholarly contribution. Occasionally, the journal publishes special issues on focused topics, including proceedings from conferences in the field of Digital Heritage.
