Aims & Scope
21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual – Beiträge zur Kunstgeschichte und visuellen Kultur is a multilingual, double-blind peer-reviewed journal that publishes in Open Access (Diamond) and is the first art history journal not tied to an academic region. Founded in September 2019, the journal represents a new forum for art history, aiming to reflect the diversity of subjects, questions, and approaches in the field. The journal's title conveys the ambition to both cultivate and expand traditional art historical research. Thus, it integrates all approaches that examine images as well as visual phenomena and practices beyond art – from all regions of the world. Contributions published are methodologically and theoretically reflected and claim relevance beyond the appreciation of exemplary individual cases, also beyond their respective specialized fields. The journal aims to reflect the multilingualism of the field as much as possible: Contributions have so far been published in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish, but other languages are also welcome. In the review section of the journal, exhibitions and books are preferably discussed in a language other than the original.
