Aims & Scope

The journal’s focus and scope include the theoretical, methodological, and applied exploration of encyclopedias and encyclopedic knowledge within the contexts of history, culture, language, social communication, information, publishing, and technology. The journal was founded as a platform for discussing the issues of building the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. Today, however, it serves as a scholarly platform for research on both the creation of encyclopedic works and the ways they shape and reflect knowledge across disciplines. Many articles focus on Ukrainian encyclopedias, but we also warmly invites studies on encyclopedism from around the world. The Encyclopedia Herald of Ukraine covers a broad range of topics, such as: History of encyclopedias : Examining the evolution of reference works from ancient times to the present, including the key figures and intellectual movements that shaped them. The theme focuses on studying how encyclopedic works reflect the intellectual climate of their time, serving as tools for preserving and advancing knowledge across diverse cultures. Encyclopedias in the modern world : Researching the impact of encyclopedias on education, culture, and policy, as well as their practical utilization in various fields. This includes their role in providing access to trustworthy, verified, and findable information in an era of rapidly growing and often unreliable information sources. The theme encompasses the ways in which encyclopedias contribute to preserving and promoting national and cultural identity, serving as vital tools for cultural heritage in a globalized world. Content and structure of encyclopedias : Studying issues associated with the structure of encyclopedias and the content of encyclopedia articles (entries). The content of encyclopedias comprises a broad spectrum of components, including texts, visual elements (illustrations, maps, etc.), bibliographic references, and features characteristic of digital formats (multimedia, hyperlinks, interactive tools, etc.). Technological and digital transformations : Exploring the effects of digitalization and new technologies on the building, development, and utilization of encyclopedias, as well as dissemination of encyclopedic knowledge (we welcome articles on artificial intelligence in contemporary encyclopedia industry). The theme entails examining the role of online encyclopedias in digital humanities. Conceptual and methodological frameworks : Investigating the principles, theories, and methodologies used in the encyclopedia publishing. The Encyclopedia Herald of Ukraine is inherently interdisciplinary. While the journal’s roots lie in encyclopedia studies, we welcome contributions that offer advances in encyclopedism, particularly from the arts and humanities, where knowledge organization, dissemination, and preservation are central, e.g.: Media and Communication Studies; History and Biography Studies; Archival, Library and Information Science; Culturology and Philosophy; Lexicography and other linguistic fields (e.g., Terminology, Cognitive Studies, Scientific Writing); Publishing and Printing Arts.
