Aims & Scope

Journal of Linguistics Research (JLR) is an academic journal that has been published since 1990. The main aim of the journal is to support the development of general linguistics in Turkey and to promote high-quality scientific publications in this field. While there are no language restrictions, the journal primarily publishes theoretical and applied linguistic articles written in Turkish or English that are based on contemporary linguistic theories and approaches, particularly those concerning Turkish and other Turkic languages spoken in Turkey. The studies to be published are expected to be authentic, high-quality studies that conform to the perspectives, principles, methods, and theories of contemporary linguistics and meet academic standards. Articles submitted to the journal must be original works that have not been previously published or submitted elsewhere for publication. The journal accepts three main types of submissions: (i) research articles, (ii) review or introductory articles (literature overviews), and (iii) book reviews. All submitted articles are first subject to preliminary evaluation by the Editorial Board in terms of general academic standards, the journal’s publication policies, and scope. Articles deemed suitable are then taken into the scientific peer-review process. The criteria required for articles to be accepted into the peer-review process are outlined separately below. Research Articles The following are the mandatory criteria regarding scope compliance for studies to be considered suitable for scientific review: • The study must be grounded in contemporary linguistic approaches and theories, and it must possess a clearly identifiable theoretical framework. • The linguistic problem addressed should be clearly defined within this theoretical framework (or a related applied approach), and the discussion should be conducted in accordance with this framework. • The study should present clear linguistic findings and/or theoretical or applied implications. • The sources used must be current and relevant to both the topic addressed and the existing linguistic literature on the subject. Although the journal requires a defined theoretical framework, it does not impose restrictions on theoretical orientation. Accordingly, both theoretical and applied studies grounded in a well-defined framework are accepted. It is worth noting that language, in addition to linguistics, is also a subject of investigation in various disciplines, such as philology, psychology, education, sociology, and literary studies. However, as is well known, not every study that deals with linguistic data qualifies as linguistic research. Therefore, submissions to the journal must directly pertain to a linguistic subfield, provide relevant feedback to that domain through their findings and implications, and comply with the scope criteria outlined above. For example, research whose results concern the teaching of a language structure as a first or foreign language primarily contributes to educational sciences rather than linguistics and is consequently outside the journal’s scope. Likewise, studies that present observations, descriptive analyses, and interpretations of various grammatical phenomena without grounding in a linguistically rigorous theoretical framework are also considered beyond the scope of the journal. Article submissions that do not comply with the journal’s scope, as illustrated by these examples, are subject to immediate rejection. For research articles, the "Research Article Submission Form," which briefly provides information about the content and scope of the study, must be completed and uploaded to the Dergipark platform along with the other required files during the application process. Review/Introductory Articles Articles of this type typically introduce a relatively less-known linguistic subfield, or present studies and literature related to a specific linguistic topic or phenomenon. The primary requirement for such work is to provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant field or subject area, including a general and, where appropriate, critical evaluation, along with a thorough bibliography covering the topic or domain. Book Reviews This type of article aims to present linguistic books of various kinds. Book reviews are expected not only to summarize the work but also to critically evaluate its contribution to the relevant body of literature. All manuscripts deemed suitable for the scientific evaluation process according to the criteria outlined above, regardless of article type, are subjected to a double-blind peer review. Each submission is evaluated by at least two expert reviewers in the field, and the associate editor (or, when necessary, the Editorial Board) makes the final decision regarding its suitability for publication based on these reviews. For manuscripts deemed unsuitable for publication, the double-blind review process may be extended for up to two rounds. If, after two rounds, the manuscript is still found unsuitable, the evaluation process is terminated. However, editors may decide to extend this process depending on specific circumstances and publication planning. The Editorial Board holds the final authority on all decisions concerning submitted manuscripts. In addition to its regular issues published in June and December, The Journal of Linguistics Research may also publish special issues. In this context, the journal editors may invite researchers to serve as guest editors, or individual scholars may apply to the Editorial Board to propose a special issue on topics that fall within the scope of the journal. All articles submitted for special issues must adhere to the journal’s scope and are subject to the same peer-review process as those in regular issues. All articles published in the journal are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0) license. The Editorial Board of the journal is committed to complying with the standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
