Aims & Scope

Contemporaneity: Historical Presence in Visual Culture explores the diverse ways in which the complexities of being in time are expressed. With each new edition, the journal examines how cultures around the world conceive of and construct their present and the concept of presentness, from prehistory to today. Through scholarly writings from several disciplines in the humanities, Contemporaneity maps the dynamic ways that cultures use visual and literary means to record, define, and interrogate their historical context and presence in time. Contemporaneity is a scholarly, open-access, peer-reviewed journal edited by graduate students in the Department of History of Art & Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. It is hosted by the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh as part of its D-Scribe Digital Publishing Program. The journal welcomes submissions from scholars at all career stages, especially graduate students and early-career researchers, and is committed to promoting inclusive, diverse, and interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture. Our editorial board seeks to: Adhere to high publishing standards that preserve the integrity of scholarship Bring junior and senior scholars and editors together through a constructive, double-blind peer-review process Generate content of lasting intellectual interest to emerging and tenured scholars Provide a forum for junior and senior scholars to develop under-researched topics and experimental methodological approaches Make scholarly writing free and accessible online Lead critical discussions around current publications and developments in curatorial and artistic practice in flexible formats. Link art historical practice to a global discussion of visual cultures across disciplinary and methodological boundaries. Encourage non-traditional formats
