npj Materials Sustainability

Aims & Scope

npj Materials Sustainability considers basic and applied research that explores all aspects of the engineering and design of materials concerning the sustainability of their production, use, and reuse. The journal covers a broad range of topics including but not limited to: Sustainable material design and development Renewable and bio-based materials Biomimicry and nature-inspired materials design Recycling, waste reduction, and waste-energy technologies Eco-friendly packaging and biodegradable and compostable packaging Sustainable materials for different industries Green chemistry and manufacturing processes Circular economy initiatives Environmental impact and the carbon footprint of materials extraction, production, and processing Social and ethical aspects of materials sustainability The journal also encourages the submission of translational research, ranging from fundamental theories to the scalable application of technological innovations, with an emphasis on sustainability metrics. We envision the increasing importance of collective efforts from multiple disciplines to address more complex, large-scale contemporary challenges relating to Sustainable Development Goal 12, “ Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns ”. The journal offers more choice to Nature Portfolio authors who are seeking a fully open-access and more inclusive platform for publishing their work. The journal is led by materials sustainability experts who collaborate to cultivate high-quality research. As part of the npj Series , this journal focuses on fostering global partnerships with the research community and other Springer Nature journals.
