Materiali di Estetica: Terza Serie
Università degli Studi di Milano · Italy · Est. 1999
Aims & Scope
Materiali di Estetica is, since 1999, one of the most authoritative and appreciated aesthetics journals in Italy. Since its inception, it has welcomed contributions from some of the leading scholars in the discipline, establishing itself as a reference scientific periodical in the landscape of aesthetic studies, in constant dialogue with national and international debate. The original phenomenological inspiration, traceable to the scholars of the "Scuola di Milano", has offered significant impulses to contemporary philosophical debate, giving rise to a fruitful dialogue between even very different positions. The title itself, "Materiali", recalls the journal Materiali filosofici, directed by Fulvio Papi, who remains the most qualified direct heir of the Banfian tradition and who coined the term "Scuola di Milano". This legacy continues to live on through the collaboration with the Fondazione Corrente in Milan, of which Papi was President of the Scientific Committee, now directed by Elio Franzini. Within this context, the cycle of "Conversazioni di estetica" (Aesthetics Conversations), founded by Papi in 1979 and now curated by Gabriele Scaramuzza and Silvana Borutti, takes shape – a seminar event that, each year, culminates in an issue of the journal. From this, the nature of Materiali di Estetica as a place for reflection at the border between art and philosophy, where the two fields relate and mutually nourish each other, takes form. Recalling one of the main representatives of the "Scuola di Milano", to the question: "What has the right to be called 'aesthetics'?", we would answer with a passage by Giulio Preti (one of Banfi's greatest students), which Ermanno Migliorini (his direct student) rightly considers valid also for aesthetics and the philosophy of art (in their specific domain). Philosophy, "Preti used to repeat, according to a definition he had made his own, is a level of meta-reflection whose object is constantly shifting". Materiali di estetica, however, has never been simply a qualified venue for essays by eminent scholars who have already achieved a high and recognizable scientific profile, but has also managed to open up to young researchers grappling with their first publications, guaranteeing them the opportunity to disseminate the results of their work. Finally, the commitment to make less-known writings by known or less-known authors familiar to the Italian reader, thanks to patient translation work, is fundamental.
